From Box 5,
Hello everyone. I intended to write a blog post the other day but I didn’t get it done before work. So I will do this review then I think I will attempt that other post later.
So last night the Wife and I went to see The Sorcerer’s Apprentice with Nicolas Cage, Jay Baruchel, Alfred Molina, and more. This was inspired of course by the scene in Fantasia of Mickey Mouse as The Sorcerer’s Apprentice with the mops and such.
Well I must say that overall I had a darn good time with this movie. To me it is a great action adventure/popcorn movie that you can just go and have a good time with. It has been done before in a few different ways but I enjoyed it, despite a few small quibbles.
I have decided that I will not be doing any (Major) spoilers in these reviews I do. But for a summary, Magic exists and Nicolas Cage plays a man looking for The Sorcerer’s Apprentice for a very long time. And he finds The Apprentice in Jay Baruchel, college student and science nerd. While that is going on Alfred Molina plays the villain in the film, out to bring out the destruction of the world. Okay I might have spoiled just a little there, but when to the Villains ever want to do anything good for the world.
I thought the acting was good from everyone, except that I thought Jay Baruchel was playing nerd just a little extra hard. And I am a fan of Nicolas Cage, yes I said it. But I honestly wish he could have let loose a bit more like Johnny Depp in the Capt. Sparrow role. But I still enjoyed his Balthazar Blake, and his sweet ride too! And everyone else I thought did a fine job.
The effects I thought were really great in the movie, especially the car chase scene. Way cool stuff there.
POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNINGS (I know what I said above, but they still aren’t to big of spoilers)
I really enjoyed how two elements, thought to be opposite of each other actually worked together. Very cool and once you see it if you don’t get what I mean I will explain further later.
Also I enjoyed at the end that despite The Apprentice becoming “Uber Apprentice” he honestly may have increased his power level. But he did not suddenly know every single thing about magic there ever was. Which usually happens in these types of movies, apprentice to master by the time the movie is over. But in this case he still has a lot to learn. I see it as he just unlocked his full potential of magic, not that he knows how to use it yet.
END SPOILERS
Regretfully this movie is getting buried by INCEPTION and Despicable Me. Not insulting those other films in any way. But I looked up TSA on Wikipedia and it is not doing well so far. Earning about 33 Million on a budget of 150 Million. Not bad but I am sure they would like it to be better. And I for one would love a sequel for this film. So please go and give it your attention.
