Hey Everyone,
I thought I would continue my articles on Netflix DVD Reviews. But before I get to the meat of the post, I have to add something about Tortilla Soup from my last post. Apparently the wife (aka Miss Kitty) knew it was a great movie it had just been a while since she had seen it. So I wanted to give credit where it was due, again wonderful movie. Thanks to Miss Kitty for the recommendation.
Onto post 2 in this series, the movie we picked second on our list was Time After Time. Now we had never heard of this before, but we decided to give it a shot after getting our inital recommendations from Netflix. It sounded interesting on the site, and we are kinda slowly trying new movies. So what the heck.
T.A.T. (shortened name) is about the adventures of one H.G. Wells who in the year 1893 has invented a time machine. Mr. Wells is having a dinner party with some of his close friends where he intends to show of the time machine to them all. But the merry event is interrupted by the police who have arrived to search for Jack The Ripper, who has struck again.
Well despite Mr. Wells’s assurance that none of his guests could be the legendary killer, his time machine is missing as well as one of his dinner guests. Well thanks to a fail-safe built into the machine, it is returned to him and he must go forward to stop Jack from terrorizing 1979 San Francisco. (The location is explained in the film.) That is the premise of this, I will say, above average thriller.
The acting in the movie is very well done with Malcolm McDowell as the man out of time Mr. Wells. David Warner is the traitorous Jack, unknown by his good friend H.G. And Mary Steenburgen as the love interest Amy who becomes entangled in the adventure. But I admit there was a bit of silliness to it, but it could be that the film itself made in 1979. One thing that did kind of throw me was the use of a slur for a lady who is homosexual. I will not repeat it here I just couldn’t believe they would use such a word at the time. Not a big deal just really threw me a bit.
If there was a negative to this movie it would be the special effects used in the film. Despite this film being made two years after Star Wars it seemed to me that the effects were quite outdated even for the time period. When the time machine was used visually it was the tye dye rainbow effect that was used in Willy Wonka & The Choclate Factory during the boat scene. Overall the effects and even some of the filming techniques seemed campy. (Don’t misunderstand me, I am willing to give a movie a shot no matter how old it is. But even at it’s age it just seemed like they didn’t try.)
All in all, not a bad movie. I feel like if we had rented it specifically Miss Kitty & I might have thought it was a waste. But with it being just something we can throw on the que, well that is the fun of Netflix. If you are looking for just something that is some decent popcorn time fun. I think you could do worse.
